How you’ll learn 

You’ll learn through a series of lectures, practical seminars and workshops, where interactive and discussion-based techniques will encourage you to engage, reflect and challenge.;

Sessions may include: 

  • participating in workshop-style sessions with your peers, including work with PGCE Art and Design trainees
  • attending presentations by subject experts
  • working on tasks in groups
  • having individual tutorials
  • visits to schools or other education settings
  • visits to museums, galleries or sites of educational interest such as The Pitt Rivers, MERL and Reading Museum (e.g. materials handling)
  • writing assignments on aspects of subject teaching and Professional Studies

Alongside University of Reading tutors, you will be taught and guided by a team of committed and experienced University-trained school mentors.

Placements

Placements enable you to develop the skills and knowledge valued by employers. You'll build your confidence in the classroom and gain practical teaching experience.

Placements also provide you with the opportunity to connect with potential employers and build your professional network.

On your secondary PGCE course, you'll carry out school placements in contrasting educational contexts, ensuring you receive a broad range of experiences. Your placements will cover the full 11–18 age range, and you will visit at least one primary school as part of your studies.

In your school placement, you will:

  • gain experience in the range of responsibilities of the classroom teacher 
  • observe other teachers 
  • plan the teaching of small groups and whole classes 
  • plan and teach elements of lessons and whole lessons 
  • reflect on and evaluate your teaching 
  • receive feedback on your teaching.

We offer a flexible and broad range of educational environments. You'll have the opportunity to gain experience in:

  • special needs schools
  • Pupil Referral Units
  • independent schools
  • museums
  • charities.

Academic links

You will benefit from our collaborations with a range of arts organisations such as Freelands Foundation and the National Society for Education in Art and Design (NSEAD). We regularly invite visitors from examination boards to talk about working with exam boards, marking and moderating. We also have strong links with the University's School of Arts and Communication Design.

We work closely with our partnership schools, and have alumni regularly bringing school groups in to take part in activities such as The Big Draw, or practical workshops led by our PGCE Art and Design cohort

Climate and sustainability education

At the University of Reading, we believe that climate and sustainability education is everyone's responsibility. You will be given access to training that enables you to incorporate climate education into your teaching, as part of our National Climate Education Action Plan.

You will learn about:

  • what is happening to our climate, how to help children learn about climate and sustainability in an age-appropriate and accessible way, and how to develop your own positioning as a teacher
  • climate justice, the impact of current and future changes to our environment and climate on ourselves and others, and the implications for teachers
  • how to translate knowledge and theory into change and personal action through building climate and sustainability education into your planning, teaching and children's learning.

Entry requirements


Entry requirements: 
You are normally required to have at least a 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent from a university outside the UK) in a subject that is related to the subject you intend to teach.

IELTS: 6.5 overall with no element less than 5.5
 
You will need to have achieved Grade 4 (or C) or above in GCSE Mathematics and English Language or equivalent qualifications.

As part of the application process for this programme, you will be required to attend an interview.

You will also need to demonstrate competence in Fundamental English and mathematics by the end of the course. This is a new DfE requirement which replaces the QTS skills tests in literacy and numeracy.

If you accept an offer with us you will also be required to successfully complete Occupational Health and Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure checks.

Pre-sessional English language Programme

Our Pre-sessional English Programme is for international students who need to meet their degree programme English language requirements.

Our courses equip you with the skills and language needed for academic success, including critical thinking, self-reflection, learner autonomy, research skills and integrating sources. The Pre-sessional English Programme is accredited by the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP), which guarantees you will receive a high-quality student experience.

Teacher Training: Secondary Art and Design

Choosing to study PGCE Art and Design

The fact that the University of Reading offered a PGCE with teaching from 11-18 was a big plus for me. Most courses are for age 11-16, but I knew I wanted to teach A level art as well. I am hoping to do some community art projects with my new school. These sorts of projects give children lots of additional skills like problem solving and can help them to see the impact of art on a wider group of people.
