Guidance on Completing your scholarship application

We understand that scholarships can be an important part of applying for university study, but that the process can be quite daunting, especially if you haven’t done it before. So, we have created this guidance to help you in your application.

Our scholarships are very competitive, so we recommend that you apply early as early as possible. For our Reading Excellence Scholarship - Undergraduate, you will need to have applied and been given an offer (conditional or unconditional) for an eligible course before you can apply. You do not need to have gone Firm and paid a deposit (if applicable) to apply for this scholarship.

To access the scholarship application, you will need to log in to me@reading which requires your University ID and your date of birth.

Before applying

  • Check your eligibility.
  • Read the instructions and the application form carefully, including the Terms and Conditions and the character limit for your answers (1000 characters for each question, 1000 character limit for your financial statement).
  • Check the deadlines – This is really important, as we cannot accept late applications. Please note that the Reading Excellence Scholarship - Undergraduate scholarship has two rounds – if you are not successful in Round 1, you will automatically be considered in Round 2 and do not need to submit a new application.

When applying

  • You are not able to amend your application once it has been submitted, so we strongly advise that you write your answers in a separate document, such as Microsoft Word, and then copy it from there and paste it to the application form only when you are ready to submit
  • Questions – You will be asked a number of questions as part of the application form. We have your qualification details already, so use this opportunity to demonstrate how you are an exceptional student
  • Funding – as this is a partial scholarship, we need to know how you intend to fund the rest of your studies, both tuition fees and living costs. Use this section to give details of how you will cover the remaining amount. This can be a combination of ways, such as personal funds, bank loans or other scholarships
  • Be yourself – you are the only person who can answer these questions like you. And it is you we want to see. So be authentic
  • Try to focus on facts, rather than emotions, when answering the questions
  • Proofread your application – carefully read through your application to make sure you have read the instructions, answered the questions carefully and that there are no mistakes

Once submitted, you will see confirmation on the screen that it has been successfully submitted.

Remember, when thinking about applying for a scholarship, a lot of students are worried that they would never be selected. But if you don’t apply, you will never know whether you could have been awarded a scholarship. Good luck!
