Prepare yourself for degree-level study: gain subject-specific and core skills to excel on your chosen undergraduate course.

Our foundation programmes offer you a direct pathway into studying at the University of Reading if you do not have the typical entry qualifications.

We offer a range of exciting degree courses — from science to arts and humanities — that can be accessed through a foundation year.

The year is an opportunity to gain the required skills and knowledge to set you up for your first year of degree study. For example, if you’re progressing onto a science degree, you may focus on basic principles in biology and chemistry, as well as underpinning skills in mathematics. Central skills, including academic writing and researching, are available on all pathways.

A foundation year is more than just a stepping-stone to a degree. You will also benefit from:

  • the development of core skills, including research, academic study and writing
  • access to our full range of facilities and resources
  • full integration into university life, before your degree year begins
  • experience of an academic environment, and the ability to work independently
  • specialist support and guidance.

Depending on your chosen degree, you will learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, practical classes and workshops.

After the foundation year

The skills you’ll learn in the foundation year will prepare you to begin your first year of degree study.

You are guaranteed a place on your chosen undergraduate course upon successful completion of the foundation year to a satisfactory level.
