Undergraduate entry requirements

Compare equivalent qualifications

Many of our degrees have subject-specific requirements. You can find the specific entry criteria for each course on the relevant course page.

Entry requirements shown on our course pages are only an indicator and we treat each application on individual merit. so don’t rule yourself out. If you are unsure whether your predicted grades would be acceptable for entry, contact our Admissions Team for advice. If you are made an offer of a place, the conditions that you need to meet to take up your place on the course will be detailed in your offer letter.

Our typical offers are expressed in terms of A level, BTEC and International Baccalaureate requirements. However, we also accept many other qualifications.

Visit our equivalent qualifications page to compare your qualifications with our A level offer.

A Levels / AS levels

Typical offers for most of our courses are expressed in terms of achievement across three A levels. Please note that all offers exclude General Studies.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

We welcome students presenting the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. If you are offered a place, we will specify an overall score that you will need to achieve. Where a course requires specific-subject knowledge equivalent to A level, you will be asked to achieve a particular grade at higher level.

BTEC National diplomas

We are happy to consider applicants with BTEC National Diplomas. Where there are subject-specific requirements, the BTEC modules must be comparable to those at A level, or the A level must be studied alongside.
We are also happy to consider applicants with BTEC HND and HNC qualifications. If you are interested in being considered for entry into the second year, please be prepared to supply the full specifications of your current course so that we can check that the curriculum is compatible. See our course pages or contact us for more information.

Other qualifications

If the qualification you are taking is not listed or you have any additional questions, please email the Admissions Teams or call +44 (0) 118 378 8372

International qualifications

We accept a wide range of overseas qualifications including (but certainly not limited to) the Malaysian STPM, Hong Kong A levels and Diploma of Secondary Education, Advanced Diplomas, Singapore A levels and Brunei A levels.
You can find country and region-specific information on our international pages. Please do contact our International Office for advice by submitting a question or calling +44 (0) 118 378 6982.
Additional information

GCSE

We normally require applicants for undergraduate courses to demonstrate a good general education. This normally includes acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy, normally equivalent to at least grade C at GCSE in English and Mathematics.

In addition, some of our courses require you to hold GCSE or equivalent qualifications in specific subjects. This will be shown on the subject pages if it applies to your chosen course.
Subject-specific requirements

Cambridge Pre-U

Applicants offering a mixture of Pre-U and A level subjects are welcomed. Subject-specific requirements can be satisfied by either Pre-U certificate or A level qualifications.
If you are completing the Pre-U Diploma, you are also very welcome to submit an application.

European Baccalaureate

If you are undertaking the European Baccalaureate then you are welcome to apply. Our typical offer ranges between 70% and 77%. Where relevant, we may ask you to achieve a certain grade in a subject.

Welsh Baccalaureate

We are happy to consider applicants presenting the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales in combination with other qualifications.

IRISH LEAVING Certificates

Applicants undertaking the Irish Leaving Certificate will be expected to achieve five subjects at Higher Level. Required scores will be specified in individual offers. We welcome evidence of Key Skills in your portfolio but we do not typically include Key Skills in our offers.

Open University

Students with 60 credits from Open University modules will satisfy University minimum requirements for entry to undergraduate study. If you have 120 credits we may be able to consider you for admission into the second year. Please contact us if you would like further information or advice relating to your circumstances.

Access to HE Diploma

We are happy to consider applicants with Access qualifications. The programme must be a QAA-recognised programme. We may ask for specific grades in specific units and for particular subjects to be studied.

Scottish framework qualifications

Applicants with Scottish Highers alone or a mixture of Advanced Highers and Highers are welcomed, but please note that each different subject can be counted once only. Where your chosen course has a subject-specific requirement, you will be asked to achieve a certain score in that subject at Higher or Advanced Higher level.

OCR Level 3 Cambridge technical diplomas

We are happy to consider applicants with OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diplomas. As a guide, typical offers for the Extended Diploma range from three distinctions (DDD) to two merits with one distinction (DMM).

T Levels

We welcome applicants studying T level qualifications. Due to the structure and academic content of the current T level subjects, we can normally only accept them for courses with no subject-specific requirements, unless you are also studying A levels in the relevant subject.

The exceptions to this are the T level in Health and the T Level in Science, which we can consider for entry to the following courses without the need for additional A level subjects:

  • BSc Food Science
  • BSc Food Technology with Bioprocessing
  • BSc Food Technology with Bioprocessing with Industrial Training
  • BSc Nutrition and Food Science
  • BSc Nutrition
  • BSc Nutrition with Professional Training
  • BSc Nutrition and Food Science with Professional Training

The T Level in Health and the T Level in Science can also be considered alongside an A Level in Chemistry for the following programmes:

  • MPAS Physician Associate Studies
  • BSc Pharmacology
  • BSc Pharmacology with a Year in Industry
  • MPharm Pharmacy

We can consider all current T level subjects for courses with no subject-specific requirements. We require an overall Distinction for courses normally requiring ABB and above, and an overall Merit for courses requiring BBB. In all cases, we require a C grade in the core component, however, we do not require a specific result in the industrial placement component.

Exceptions
Please note that we sometimes update entry requirements throughout the year, so check online or contact the Admissions Team for the latest information.
