Teaching and Learning at Reading

Study at the University of Reading

Our vision and educational priorities

“Our approach is one which puts community at its heart. We envisage a supportive community as a basis for challenging students to achieve their full potential, and for this potential to be realised in ways that make a positive social impact."

- Peter Miskell and Elizabeth McCrum, Pro-Vice-Chancellors (Education and Student Experience)

As a university, we have a straightforward purpose: to foster communities of learning in which staff and students work together to develop knowledge, ideas, and skills that serve the needs of wider society. Excellence in teaching is central to such a purpose, and at the University of Reading this is reflected in our core educational priority areas:

  • to be a genuinely caring and inclusive community of learning

We take it as self-evident that learning requires openness to new ideas and to different ways of thinking about and experiencing the world. We aspire to create an environment that respects and supports the needs of individual learners from all backgrounds and in doing so enriches the wider collective student experience. For us, a diverse and inclusive learning community is at the very core of what it means to be a university.

  • to provide an excellent learning experience

We strive for excellence in the quality of our teaching and the quality of our students’ work.  Learning opportunities, assessment and feedback are carefully designed to provide the scaffolding that students need to be challenged and achieve their full potential.

  • to ensure that learning is impactful

We support our students to get the maximum impact from their studies, to benefit from their learning in a way that advances their future professional careers. Impactful learning also benefits wider society. We work with employer organisations to address local skills gaps and equip graduates with the tools to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our societies – sustainability, diversity and inequality.

Key projects

We want to inspire innovative and creative approaches to teaching and learning by working in partnership with colleagues and with our student community. Here are just some of our projects that are helping us to improve the student experience and evolve our approaches:

Portfolio Review

The University’s Portfolio Review supports the Excellence, Sustainability and Community principles of the University’s Strategic Plan, by making the following changes:

  • moving to an academic year based on semesters rather than terms, bringing us in line with other higher education institutions. From September 2024 the structure of the year will change from three terms to two semesters, with shorter assessment periods at the end of each. This will improve how courses are organised, facilitate assessment closer to the point of teaching, rather than all at the end of the year, and improve opportunities to study abroad or go on placements.
  • ensuring a coherent and distinctive portfolio that reflects student demand
  • changes to programme and module structures to achieve a more consistent student experience, for example considering module shape and size, optionality and module allocation
  • enhancing learning though the use of digital technology.

Current staff can find further information on the Staff Portal.

Inclusive Teaching and Learning: Our Vision

The University of Reading aims to create an environment that respects and supports the needs of individual learners from all backgrounds, and enriches the wider collective student experience. We know that a diverse and inclusive learning community is at the very core of what it means to be a university, and that learning requires openness to new ideas and different ways of thinking about – and experiencing – the world. Current staff can find more information on the Inclusive Teaching and Learning website.

Curriculum Framework

The Curriculum Framework outlines a set of programme principles which underpin the curriculum and engender the range of attributes expected for University of Reading graduates. These principles are used by programme teams in the design, delivery and enhancement of new and existing programmes and modules.

Education for sustainable development

Sustainability has become a cornerstone of our Strategic Plan and is one of the four principles informing our work.  As such, we are embedding environmental sustainability across both our curriculum and staff training programmes. We are working toward the following goals:

  • that all graduates of the University will have a fundamental understanding of the concepts related to Sustainable Development
  • that our students are enabled and empowered to become effective in positively contributing to sustainability problem-solving in their lives, professions, and communities

Closing the awarding gap

The University of Reading’s target is to reduce the awarding gap between Black and minority ethnic students and white students to 5% in 2024/25. We also aim to eliminate the awarding gap between students from advantaged and disadvantaged backgrounds by 2024/25. Read more about these targets and our other commitments to underrepresented groups in our Access and Participation Plan.

Learning Capture

The University’s Learning Capture solution (using software called ‘YuJa’) enables and supports personal learning capture (e.g., screencasts). It offers students opportunities to review their learning at their own pace, as a revision tool or to check session notes.

Student Voice and Partnership

Partnership is at the heart of what we do, helping to improve the student experience, develop and inspire staff, and evolve our approaches to teaching and learning. We support colleagues to work in partnership with their students, and to support students to act as participants, co-creators, evaluators and change agents.

Students have the opportunity to join student panels, be a Student Partner, and participate in focus groups to help shape their university experience, as well as a chance to work with staff on both education and research projects, such as our Partnerships in Learning and Teaching scheme or Reading Internship Scheme (RIS) projects.

Our people

At the University of Reading, we celebrate and value our staff; they are integral to the success of the University. Our staff are enthusiastic, well-qualified in their fields and committed to providing the very best education for our students. We are constantly developing our approaches to teaching and learning, creating relevant and engaging environments where our students can excel and our staff can flourish.

The University has a large number of National Teaching Fellows, all of whom play an active role in teaching and learning leadership across the University.

Our University Teaching Fellowship is a prestigious award for individuals who have demonstrated individual excellence, and made a significant contribution to the development of teaching and learning at the University. Find out more about our University Teaching Fellows.

Teaching Excellence Framework

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) is a system that assesses the quality of teaching in universities in England. Following the release of the OfS TEF Guidance and our full TEF data set at the end of September 2022, we worked with the TEF Narrative Group and Expert Reading Panel to pull together our provider submission over the autumn term.

In 2023, the University of Reading was awarded the TEF Silver award overall, and silver for student experience and outcomes. The awarding panel noted outstanding quality in these areas:

  • Research, scholarship, professional practice and/or employer engagement.
  • Approaches to supporting student success.
  • Continuation and completion rates.

"This award is testament to the dedication of the highly professional and talented staff who teach, inspire and support our students throughout their learning experience here at Reading."
