Professor Hannah Cloke OBE, Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences
Flooding destroys lives. Every year it kills thousands of people around the world, and affects millions more. Professor Hannah Cloke is interested in developing techniques to help us prepare better for flooding by improving forecasting.
Hannah's work feeds directly into teaching, with modules covering current and recent floods in the UK, a forecasting exercise, and representatives from external organisations coming to campus to talk with students. This is just one example of the real-world research that you could get involved in here.
Dr Mark Shanahan runs the undergraduate Parliamentary Studies module, which enables students to gain first-hand experience of the inner workings of the UK political system. Students on the module have the opportunity to work directly with current and former members of Parliament, who visit to lead seminars and provide a fascinating and honest insight.
Other modules include the opportunity to help produce a weekly politics radio show, combining political expertise with editing and broadcast skills, and the Department’s Model United Nations where you can take part in simulation events playing the role of a UN nation.
Dr Philippa Cranwell, Department of Chemistry
Dr Philippa Cranwell plays a very active role in the Department of Chemistry, helping students to apply for study at Reading, find a placement, take part in a research project, and choose a career path after graduation.
She is one of many champions of teaching and learning in Reading, ensuring that our students and their learning are a top priority.
